Common Running Injuries | Things to consider prior to running

All feet come in different shapes and sizes; therefore, foot injuries can differ depending on each individual. In this post, we will discuss some common foot and ankle running injuries and simple ways to reduce or prevent such injuries.

  1. Plantar fasciitis: pain that occurs in the arch of your foot caused by inflammation in the tissue that connects your toes to your heels.
  2. Shin splints: characterized by pain in the front of your lower leg caused by overworked muscles or tendons.
  3. Stress fractures: small cracks or bruising of the bone
  4. Achilles Tendonitis: overuse injury to the Achilles tendon, which connect your calf muscles to the heel bone. Commonly caused by sudden increase in intensity of activity.
  5. Runner’s knee: also known as patellofemoral pain syndrome which is caused when the kneecap rubs against the femur bone, causing pain in the front of your knee.

Things to consider prior to running:

  1. Proper footwear: visit a local running store and seek advice from the shoe experts on the best option for you. A strong, stable pair of shoes will provide a good foundation for you to prevent injuries.
  2. Gradual start: start your running program by walking first. High intensity right off the back will increase your risk of injuries. Start slow and increase intensity at a steady pace.
  3. Rest: rest days are very important in your program to allow your body to heal and recover. Skipping rest days will put you at a higher risk of injuries.
  4. Stretching: stretching is an important part of your running program. Stretching after your run will reduce muscle soreness and risk of injuries, as well as improve muscle flexibility.
  5. Strengthening: lower body and core strengthening can aide in strengthening the muscles required for running and in return, reduce risk of injuries.
